I was once a caged design nerd...

Looking for a way out

What it was like:

I was working for a healthcare company, creating the same boring marketing collateral, begging for over a year for a small raise (only to be told that that was the most they could ever pay me…wtf…how motivating.) I stuck with it for years thinking that this was job security I needed to support my family. Then the unexpected happened. No, I didn’t get laid off…it was much worse. I was told that they wanted to make me the Director of IT because “I knew about computers.” Now I should tell you that I have no training, formal or otherwise in information technology! I was informed that this was a “huge promotion” and I would continue being the Creative Director as well, but I would also be responsible for helping geriatric therapists get onto their Zoom meetings. This came with no financial raises or incentives. This was the last draw. I determined at that point I was done with working for others, and Be Someone Design was born! I have since turned it into a solo, six figure business.

What happened:

I had just had my second child and I was scared to death to not have a “steady job!” With my amazing wife, doing the hardest job in the world of taking care of our children, it was on me to provide for our household. This time, I was so motivated to make it work that I JUMPED IN WITH BOTH FEET!

I called anyone and everyone I had ever worked for and with and started grinding. I made a lot of mistakes that cost me, but I never gave up. I spent years refining my craft and developing processes that allowed me to do what I love.

The way it is now:

  • Now, I can say that I honestly would never go back. I have built a studio in my back yard and get to work there every day. I now:

  • Get to always pick up my kids from school.

  • Can leave on impromptu camping trips whenever I like

  • Choose (for the most part) who I work with and what projects I take on.

  • Get to work on passion projects when the time feels right, instead of in the dead of night before I wake up for someone else’s job.
